Alice Anderson, all that glitters is not gold

Alice Anderson, all that glitters is not gold

As a child other kids would point at Alice Anderson’s red hair. As an artist her red hair has proved to be more of an inspiration than a taunt. She works with beautiful copper wire, wrapping or mummifying everyday objects creating their jewel-like appearance. Over 100 everyday objects, including a copper covered telephone, guitar and staircase can be seen at The Wellcome Collection from the 22 July until 18 October 2015.

But what about the cover? The angst of a debut novelist

by Catherine Simpson When I told friends that my debut novel, Truestory, was going to be published one of the most common reactions was: ‘But what about the cover?’ I admit it had been on my mind too. However, I’m a writer, not a jacket designer, so the cover wasn’t up to me. This was a good job because I wouldn’t have had a clue how to create a decent

John O’Groats, more than a signpost

It was a long way to travel to get a photo of a signpost. However, these days visitors to John O’Groats are less likely to turn on their heel disappointed at travelling all that way just for some signage. Thanks to Natural Retreats, who worked with Scottish architects GLM and Manchester interior design company, No Chintz, there is self-catering accommodation, a shop and co-operative cafe.  Admirably, Natural Retreats decided to keep

Classic Italian recipe from Fyfe Smokery, Dunfermline

If you’ve just been on holiday to Italy you might want to re-capture some of that holiday spirit by making Spaghetti alle vongole at home. Here Elaine Hardie from the Fyfe Smokery, Dunfermline, tells us how. Spaghetti alle vongole. Clams are very popular the length and breadth of Italy, and simple recipes allow the main ingredient to shine, the lovely little bi-cuspid clams. They would generally choose pallourde clams, with

Barry’s Tree Church

Barry Cox decided there was a space on his land in New Zealand that needed a church. The churches he’d studied over the years while travelling in Europe were the inspiration but he combined this with his other passion, trees. Fortunately, he knew a thing about trees; his business  re-locates huge mature trees with a giant ‘tree spade’, a contraption that looks a bit like a huge apple corer. With
