ECA Fashion Show 2012 – bursting at the seams with talent
Tickets are on sale now for the Edinburgh College of Art Fashion Show which celebrates the work of graduating students. Nine shows will take place across three days from 23 to 25 May with a highlight being a catwalk show in Edinburgh University’s Playfair Library.
The outfit above is the work of Louise Bennetts, shortlisted for the Nicole Fahri Award. In an extreme case of providing a creative environment for your children, the fashion show’s press call took place in Edinburgh University’s Informatics Building which was designed by Louise’s architect parents.
Programme Director Mal Burkinshaw says that ECA tends to produce ‘all rounders’. ‘It’s a small course,’ he explains ‘with one to one teaching. We focus on drawing skills and, unusually, the students here do all their own cutting and making.’ Many of the college’s graduates go on to do study at top international fashion schools or end up working in fashion houses in London and abroad. Burkinshaw has been puzzled in the past that the media has queried why this talent can’t be retained in Scotland. ‘Creativity doesn’t have international boundaries,’ he says. ‘We are training these students to take their skills out into the world.’ Like Louise Bennetts’ parents, themselves graduates of Edinburgh College of Art who returned to design a cutting edge piece of the city’s landscape – who knows what they may one day bring back?
Tickets for the show cost £15 and are available from The Hub.
