Among Dunfermline’s several pockets of impressive period houses, such as Park Avenue, Transy and Garvock, one area often overlooked is Pilmuir Street. The street, which runs north from the town centre right up to Queen Anne High School on the town’s perimeter, features on its east side handsome terraced villas with large west-facing bay windows. A little faded and rather out of favour for some years, these elegant houses have
The term ‘ideal first home’ suggests something petite and manageable, perhaps a one bed flat in a new build block. First timers Katie and Ryan however have gone for something much more ambitious – and more splendid! – plunging into a back-to-the-bare-bones renovation of a dilapidated, stone built Edwardian end terrace in central Dunfermline. When they moved in, in the summer of 2020, the house had not been lived in
If there is a supplier of more dramatic or better styled floristry in Fife than Tupelo Tree, we haven’t come across it. Now this ethically minded, woman owned business is set to grow as it opens a new online shop where you can buy an amazing range of dried flora and fauna. Everything is foraged and gathered locally, packaged and posted in natural paper, paper tape and long cardboard boxes
The period features police assume that older houses with their high ceilings, original fireplaces and sash & case windows are the only way to create good interior design. Yet many of us live in new houses in modern estates. We enjoy the easy functionality that experienced developers bring to our lives. And, while there may be no cornicing or ceiling roses that doesn’t mean the design has to be minimal;
Dunimarle Castle and Chapel, one km west of Culross had fallen into disrepair and had been vandalised when new owners asked GLM architects to renovate and refurbish the magnificent A-listed castle, in a prominent elevated position facing south over the Forth. A major feature of the castle had once been a magnificent Orangery. In the 1960s this had been truncated by having its roof removed and replaced by a much lower
Love the clever combination of these rough hewn, beautiful pieces of wood on top of spindly, retro legs – a look which manages to be rustic and urban at the same time. The tables were made by Ian Davidson and his partner Jen Marshall for their small craft business, Country Collective, which they launched in their workshop near Oakley in Fife, late spring 2017. The timber live edge designs also
Less than an hour’s drive from Fife is the MHOR Festival which runs this weekend from Friday 26 May to 28 May. Hosted by the very affable Tom Lewis on the land next to one of his two hotels, Monachyle Mhor, the Festival is a mix of very good food, live music, and theatre. The Friday night feast is five courses by five chefs including Chef of the Year, Lorna
It’s hard to imagine being anything but cheery in this colourful 50s style interior designed by owner and expert furniture upcycler, Emma White. This two-bedroomed cottage is available to rent on the Isle of Skye and is in the village of Carbost which has a local pub, The Old Inn, a shop and the famous Talisker whisky distillery . There’s a small gate at the bottom of the garden leads directly
This beautiful, award-winning house in Elie is designed by South Queensferry based WT Architecture. It replaced an existing bungalow and the building is designed to make the most of the views towards the coastal lighthouse and across the Firth of Forth. An open plan living space links the two storey main house to the smaller bothy accommodation. Photos by David Barbour
