The first ‘Hot Pants’? Fashion photos at Glasgow School of Art, 1953

In 1953 the Picture Post featured these photos from the Glasgow School of Art’s annual charity fashion show. Check out the tartan shorts suit created 15 years before Mary Quant designed ‘Hot Pant’s in the late 60s. The iconic Mackintosh Building can be seen in some shots. If you want to find out more about Charles Rennie Mackintosh the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has a exhibition in London until

Sherry is not just for Christmas

By Paul Rudge, Reuben’s Wine Store, Dunfermline Ever since Sir Francis Drake raided the Port of Cadiz in 1587 and looted more than 3000 barrels of sherry or `sack` as it was known in those days, the Brits have been mad for the famous Spanish tipple. Britain has long been the most important export market for Spain’s most noted fortified wine. During its heyday it enjoyed an unrivalled position as

The Wee Restaurant, North Queensferry

Since opening in 2006 chef Craig Wood and his wife, Vikki have built up a reputation for good food at The Wee Restaurant in North Queensferry, and, with only 40 covers, the venue is true to its name. The chef’s efforts have been recognised with a number of very favourable reviews, and at the end of 2014, the Fife eatery won Scottish Licensed Trade News’ Restaurant of the Year 2014.

50 Shades of Scotland

Thankfully this has nothing to do with red rooms. This clever idea is from Scottish illustrator, Emily MacKenzie. There are two prints that you can buy from her Etsy shop; 50 Shades of Scotland and, in the best non-partisan spirit, 50 Shades of England. Interesting to speculate what colours represent a nation; perhaps you’d expect Scotland to be the colours of hills, heather and thistles. Her other illustrations are cute

Abbot House, Dunfermline celebrates 20 Years

In summer the café at Abbot House, Dunfermline probably has one of the best views in Scotland. From the tables in the very pretty walled garden you can see the historic Dunfermline Abbey. With the 2016 opening of the new museum next door there are plans to link the Abbot House garden to the Museum’s modern garden, creating a larger, more diverse space. The garden is all the more impressive

Swing Ltd, Glasgow

Swing Ltd is probably not for the faint hearted. The night Avocado Sweet visited the Glasgow club, the performers, a couple both dressed in tails, were pulling members of the audience on to the dance floor to tango to an Eminem track quickly followed by a Glen Miller song. But the engaging owner Craig has big ambitions for this tiny venue. He’s recreating a 1920s style club complete with table

Ardnamurchan distillery makes it on to world’s hottest new attractions for 2015

Lonely Planet has included an Ardnamurchan distillery as one of the world’s hottest new attractions for 2015. Adelphi Whisky, based in Charlestown, Fife is delighted that their new distillery which is on the shores of Loch Sunart in the Western Highlands achieved a place on the much-coveted list.  In Autumn 2013 Avocado Sweet featured Adelphi when Prince Albert of Monaco,  the company’s most famous customer, along with Princess Charlene, planted a tree

An Aberdonian take on Scandi design

This Aberdeenshire stone-built Heath Cottage has a beautiful Scandinavian-inspired interior thanks to its owners, Brown and Brown Architects. Equally appealing is their client’s refurbished cottage in South Crown Street, Ferryhill (pictured at end).  The practice undertakes commissions throughout north east Scotland stretching to the Western Isles and future projects include the old Portsoy Boat House. Check out the ‘before’ pictures to get a sense of the transformation. All photography by
