For those of us who find being good difficult why not check into The Good Hotel.  Their philanthropic approach is designed to inspire the "good in us all'.  The eco-friendly hotel decor features reclaimed and recycled construction materials.

Saving the planet has delivered quirky and interesting design features:  the bench (pictured below) made from recycled felt blankets; a vending machine branded by ReadyMade magazine which dispenses sustainable t-shirts and wallets made out of FedEx envelopes; platform beds built out of reclaimed pine and blankets made out of recycled juice bottles.

Or you can borrow one of their resident Globe bicycles for free. In reception there's an orange phone that connects to a "philanthropy concierge" who arranges volunteer shifts through One Brick, a local charity.  A photobooth, fun if you're not getting your passport picture done, is in reception and you're encouraged to display your mug shot  alongside the less self-conscious guests. If you've still not managed to be good then there's a final chance at check out; guests can donate $1.50 to One Brick or offset their carbon footprint through Carbonfund.org.

If all that fails then The Hotel Chelsea in Manhattan is perhaps more your style.  In the meantime a clear conscience starts at the very reasonable price (for a city centre hotel in San Francisco) of $99 a night.
