Great to see an author of the standing of Maggie O’Farrell in Dunfermline last Friday (3 June) to talk about her new book This Must be the Place. Northern Ireland born O’Farrell was charming and thoughtful as she addressed a packed upstairs room at The Bruery. Among the many interesting things she shared were that she stammered badly when she was younger, is an avid reader with Jane Eyre being her favourite book and that people at author events ask more interesting questions as they have their book signed than they ever do at the question and answer session. She also revealed that This Must be the Place was inspired by O’Farrell coming upon, by chance, a weeping, heavily pregnant, A-list star in a cafe toilet. The star’s identity, despite the best efforts of the audience of Friday, remains a mystery to all but O’Farrell.
